Water Safety Beyond Summer
Water safety doesn’t stop when summer ends. Throughout the winter months, the Kenosha Safety Around Water Coalition continues raising awareness and offering tips to help keep our community safe in and around water.

Bath Time Should Be Fun and Worry-Free

Bath time should be a relaxing, joyful part of family life. It’s a chance for giggles, bubbles, and bonding. But it’s also a moment when safety matters most.

Drowning can happen in as little as 20 seconds and often occurs silently, without splashing or obvious warning. A brief lapse in supervision is all it takes. The good news? These tragedies are preventable.

Each year, more than 4,000 people die from unintentional drownings in the U.S. Among young children, about 21% of drownings occur in bathtubs, with infants under 1 year old at the greatest risk. Drowning is also the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1–4, underscoring the importance of constant supervision and simple safety habits.

Even just a few inches of water can pose a serious danger for babies and toddlers. That’s why January’s Bathtub Safety Month is the perfect reminder to refresh safe bath routines and share these life-saving tips with caregivers, grandparents, and babysitters.

Essential Bath Safety Tips for Families

  • Never Walk Away
If you must leave the bathroom, take your child with you. Never leave a child alone in the tub, even for a moment.

  • Supervise Constantly
Your full attention is the best protection. Stay within arm’s reach and never rely on baby seats or bath rings for safety.

  • Prepare Ahead
Gather towels, soap, shampoo, and pajamas before starting the bath so you never need to step away.

  • Use Safe Water Levels
Follow the “2 under 2” rule: keep water at 2 inches or less for children under 2 years old.

  • Stay Within Arm’s Reach
Always stay close enough to respond immediately if your child slips or needs help.

  • Teach Water Safety Early
Encourage safe behavior in the tub. No standing, rough play, or excessive splashing.

  • Empty the Tub Immediately
Drain all water right after use. Even small amounts left behind can be dangerous.
